When you hear focal lengths between 10-30 mm, the first thing that comes to any photographers mind would be a landscape shot (a weird distortion shot may be next in the list :D). Few years back, when I set out to quickly catch a sunset, I would find a location; set out my tripod; put on the wide angle lens; then wait for the sun to set after adjusting camera settings. I would go the whole shoot with just my wide angle lens on the body.
But later in my outings, I started pulling out my telephoto lens just out of curiosity first, but soon realize the potential this has. With the telephoto, now you can pick a foreground subject and focus the attention their by compressing it in to the shot while giving subtle hints that its captured during a sunset. Here are two shots I took on my first ever winter outing (I tend to stay inside since I hate the cold). The first one was taken with a wide angle lens and the second with a telephoto lens. The second shot focuses on one small region of the first one in much more detail. See what they each bring to the table.

Since I already had the telephoto lens in place, took this hand held, placing the moon between two telephone wires to create the frame.
Would love to hear your thoughts on this...or your similar experiences.
